Romans 8:28
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Julian of Norwich, who lived in the 1300’s was a religious woman who, among other things, oversaw a convent. One of the things she is credited with saying is All shall be well and all manner of things shall be well. Julian almost died early in her life and was left scarred by her illness but, she continued to be a light for Christ, trusting that all manner of things would, one day, be well.
Each of us have known moments in our lives when circumstances have been debilitating. Sometimes it is hard to come back from these setbacks. If we tell the truth, someone reading this has not come back, not yet. But that’s where Julian’s wisdom joins that of the Apostle Paul. We cannot see the hand of God or how it is moving to bring good out of the circumstances that were (are) unfair, unsettling and unwarranted, but we are called to believe that God is working things out for our good. It is not easy but, when life is challenging and no way forward appears on the horizon, may we find strength to say, all manner of things shall be well because, my God you will work this out for the good.
