Luke 22:17, 19

“And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, ‘Take this, and divide it among yourselves’: And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, ‘This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.’ “

Jesus gives thanks in a direct way two different times in the Gospels, once when he feeds the multitudes with the loaves and fishes, and here at the table which we call the Lord’s Table.  Each time Jesus sits at this table, he gives thanks over the bread and cup.  Why would Jesus give thanks, knowing what’s coming next?  How does he give thanks in the midst of challenging circumstances?

And how will we give thanks today when our world is reeling from evil perpetrated by sick hearts and minds?  How will we give thanks when there are challenges facing us globally and locally?  How?  I am so glad you asked!!!  We give thanks in exactly the same way, and for exactly the same reason Jesus did.  We give thanks today because our current circumstances do not dictate our future lives.  Though challenge presented itself to Jesus as he sat at that table, he was able to look beyond the momentary challenge to the promise of God for joy, peace, love, presence and power.

Today, we give thanks for MANY things and many people.  However, if you face a challenge today, GIVE THANKS ANYWAY, for your current circumstances do not dictate your future life.  In Jesus, you are promised life abundant.  Believe and give thanks.
