John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life”.

When I was a little girl, I spent many a summer holiday in Mississippi with my Dad’s (Westpoint) and my Mom’s (Aberdeen) family. Though my relatives’ homes had all the basics, missing from their rural communities were street lights.  Walking between aunties’ houses, after sunset, was a scary proposition because it was soooooo dark.

One night, when I was about 12, I was trying to make my way back to Daddy Willy’s house, but it was WAY too dark and I was frightened beyond belief.  In the distance, I could see the lights of Daddy Willy’s home, but I was not sure I could get there.  I called out and out of the nighttime gloom, I heard my dad’s voice and saw a flashlight in front of me.  My dad found me in the dark and with his flashlight, he lit the way all the way home.

I am the way, the truth and the life.  Jesus’ words were made so very clear to me that night.  I could not find my own way, but the one who knew the way and could illuminate it for me, the one who could lead me in the way, came and found me.  My dad was the way that night and he reminds me that the one we call Jesus is our way now.  Our task, to follow.  May we be found in the way, this day.
