Can any of you, however much he worries, make himself an inch taller?
This question comes near the end of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. He has just finished encouraging his audience to rely on God, to trust God. It is so much easier to trust something or someone you can see, and we cannot see God. However, Beloved, we can see the evidence of God’s care all around us. As Matthew says, the birds never sow or reap and yet, they eat each day. The lilies of the field do not shop at Macy’s, but they are arrayed in glorious finery. They do not know the concept of trust, still they live it out daily. Maybe they teach us something by their example. On this day may we seek to trust God and no longer live in the space of worry.
