A Weapon We All Carry

Proverbs 18:21

“The tongue has the power of life and death and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

Imagine that I have equipped you with a deadly weapon. It is well concealed and no one will know you have it on your person. You can whip it out at a moment’s notice and then, with one deadly flick, inflict wounds that go deep and may not ever heal.

What is that weapon? Well, you have one and, you have had it since birth. It is your tongue. The power that we carry in that small, well hidden muscle, can be both deadly and full of healing. However we use it we will produce fruit. We can produce fruit that is sweet and nourishing or we can produce fruit that kills the heart and spirit.

What kind of fruit will your tongue produce?

Prayer: God of power and of truth, you have given us the power of life and death in the use of our tongues. Enable us to use them to produce life giving fruit. We pray. Amen.

Practice: Each time you see a piece of fruit in the next 24 hour, stop and assess what you are up to with your tongue and with your being. Is it producing that which is sweet and nourishing or something else?
